Antique Swedish Love Token Folk Art c1878

A beautifully painted wash board with floral motifs, or love token, with it's original paintwork still holding strong.

The paint is typically Scandinavian, a lovely folky item. It's dated to 1878 which can still be read.

Love tokens in rural Scandinavia used to be given to a loved one during courtship, useful everyday household objects. If the woman deemed the suiter acceptable, she would use the item with pride, if not, it would be returned. Upon eventual, and hopeful, marriage, all of the love tokens then became redundant and simply became keepsakes instead.

A lovely piece of history.
