c1944 Prisoner of War Folk Art Box
A souvenir from a German World War II camp, carved by the hand of a French soldier.
It could possibly originate from a coal mining camp, in which the conditions was extremely harsh, but difficult to say for certain as there used to be more than one camp within the Sterkrade region of Germany.
Bittersweet, an object that reminds us all of the recent history of the Wars, yet shows the hope that one soldier held onto whilst captured, knowing that one day he would be free.
Such a simple item, yet it is a beautiful piece of folk art and history, and can be used still for storage.
